So Hilary has accepted the inevitable, and Obama is the candidate.
And so we come to the next big question - who will shoot Obama?
It is a pretty absurd question really, but Hilary raised it, it has been in air for yonks, and for some reason people seem to think that it is a definite possibility - and the futher implication that this is because he is black - or not white - or half caste - or mixed race - or liberal - or whatever.
But for some reason they overlook that standing for President is not dissimilar to painting a target on your chest and inviting nutcases to shoot you.
Let's see....
There is Lincoln of course, and then there is James A Garfield, William McKinley and John F Kennedy who were all actually killed.
The Garfield assassination is of particular interest because he took some weeks to die. And in an effort to save his life, the inventor Alexander Graham Bell used a metal detector to find the bullets. This caused much alarm as the president seemed to have been riddled. Until someone decided that the machine was reading the bedsprings.
And then we have the attempted assassinations: Andrew Jackson, Theordore Roosevelt, Franklyn D Roosevelt, Harry S Truman, John F Kennedy, Richard Nixon (twice), Gerald Ford (twice), Jimmy Carter, Ronald Regan, George Bush Snr, Bill Clinton, and George Bush Jnr.
Oh and then you have the presidents that are rumoured to have been assassinated: Zachary Taylor and Warren G Harding.
Ok for Barry to join that group, he needs first to be elected - and I can't be arsed to find a list of the preseidential candidates who were bumped off or had shots fired at them - but I'm sure you'll agree that being and present and not being the subject of an assassins bullet is not such a rare occurance as one might think.
Though the other thing about Obama which strikes me is that people keep talking about him being the New John F Kennedy - in which case any owman should not go to a lake with one of his relatives - or as some people would have it, Not the New John F Kennedy.
I am a little bemused by this, since for the life of me, apart from getting shot, nearly starting a nuclear holocaust, sleeping with Marilyn Monoroe, having something to do with the civil rights movement and declaring himself to be either a hot dog or a donut - I can't for the life of me think of what Kennedy actually did that was so wonderful.
Indeed it might be argued that it was Kennedy that paved the way for the Imperialist American dream we see being played out in the world today, when he didn't take heed of his predessor Eisenhower's warnings about the millitary industrial complex and embarked on the space program, with the consequent ratching up of defence spending in the long term, and the costly error of Vietnam in the short term.
It is true I am not a fan of the Kennedy's because of their father, and his attempts to hand over Europe to the Nazi's in 1940, but honestly! whenever I here people go on about the Kennedy's I do try to follow and understand what made them such legends, but really I find myself struggling.
Which leaves me wondering quite why Obama would want to be the New John F Kennedy.
I guess this all relates to his policy lite agenda, and his asperational appeal. It's simply that he is young, good looking, does say or do very much - and isn't Hilary Clinton.
On the subject of Hilary, I can't help thinking that the fact she got so far, pretty much proves Ameicans are dumb.
Whenever I see her I am reminded of the fat woman who is on the church committees and a parent governor at the school, and a hundred and one other things for the simple reason people vote for her because otherwise they might end up having to have a convesration with the vapid witch.
I did have to laugh the other night when I up late and heard her speech - which for some reason was broadcast in full - and she she said the really good thing about the primaries was that people had turned out in record numbers - 'yeah' I thought, 'record numbers to stop you getting elected.'
It was also nice to see that he campaign ran out of money and she had to lend the money from her own funds - not give you understand - lend. No doubt she will attempt to recoup the losses selling badges and flags on ebay - or maybe will get a marker pen and shcnage the dates.
One thing is for sure she will not put her money where her mouth is.
peace:)
