Flid, spaz, scopey, mong, are a few of the expressions used to describe those with disabilites. Add to this the political rhetoric of the Labour party that encourages the view that the disabled are a bunch of spongers and lay-abouts.
This disgraceful posturing reached it's zentih when about six months ago Radio 5 Live interviewed a Labour councillor from Scotland who boldly stated that depression was a form of anti-social behaviour.
But then why should the Labour party bother about the disabled? They have made clear that they stand for 'hard working families'.
So is anyone surprised that the woman who is alleged to have killed herself and her disabled daughter in a burning car, appears to have been subject to a campaign of harrassment by local tenagers.
The neighbours claim the police refused to respond to calls from Ms Pilkington, which included incidents of youths throwing stones at her house.
The police claim they are reviewing their logs, and the arrests they have made of local youths are unrelated to their investigation.
It will be interesting to see what the police find in their records. Despite what they say officially, the police do not keep a record of all incidents reported to them: which in part explains the discrepency between the offical crime figures and the British crime survey.
A related issue is whether the police will be held to account for failing in there duty with regard to the Disability Discrimination Act.
peace:)
